Vietnam, Barbados examine ways to step up bilateral cooperation

Vietnamese Ambassador to Venezuela, and Barbados Le Viet Duyen on June 3 had an online meeting with Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados Simone Rudder to discuss bilateral cooperative ties between the two countries.

Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Le Viet Duyen thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados for their enthusiastic support in arranging necessary procedures for him to soon submit the letter of credence to Governor General of Barbados Sandra Mason.

The Vietnamese diplomat highlighted the constant development of the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Barbados over the past 26 years since both nations set up their diplomatic ties, while emphasizing that the Government and people of Vietnam always attach great importance to promoting the bilateral friendship and cooperation with Barbados, especially in fields where the two countries have potential such as investment, trade, education, technology and telecommunications.

Ambassador Le Viet Duyen also informed his host about the results of the 13th Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the outstanding achievements in terms of political, economic and cultural spheres Vietnam has recorded after 35 years of carrying out the Doi Moi (Renwal) process which has brought a facelift to Vietnam, helping elevating the nation's stature and international prestige.

For her part, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados Simone Rudder said that the two countries boast potential for broader cooperation in multiple fields such as agriculture, investment, trade, education and training, especially experience sharing in cultural heritage conservation and marine resource management for effective exploitation and sustainable development.

In addition, she described Vietnam as an important gateway to access the ASEAN market with more than 650 million people.

Rudder affirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Barbados will send the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam a number of draft framework agreements on trade and investment cooperation, avoidance of double taxation with a view to promoting all-around cooperation between the two countries at the earliest.

In addition, the Barbados side will also look into the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the chambers of commerce, and accelerate the possibility of establishing the Barbados - Vietnam Friendship Association as a means of bringing bilateral relations to new heights in the near future, she added.
