Kagawa prefecture (Japan)’s survey for the project on reducing marine waste on Cat Ba island

From 12/9 – 14/9/2022, Kagawa prefecture working delegation accompanied by representatives of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Natural Resources and Environment and environmental technical expert made a business trip and an on-site survey to prepare for the project on marine waste reduction in Cat Ba island proposal to Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

During the COVID-19 epidemic, the agencies of Kagawa held a number of online meetings with the participation of Hai Phong Department of Foreign Affairs and Hai Phong Department of Natural Resources and Environment to initially prepare for the the project aiming at contributing to solve the issue of marine waste drifting to the coast of Cat Ba island, thereby promoting tourism development based on the potential of "clean sea". The survey resumed the previous online discussions for the actual status of waste discharge, collection and treatment in Cat Ba island. With the support of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the Department of Foreign Affairs and the People's Committee of Cat Hai district, the delegation visited the fishing port of Tran Chau, Ang Cha landfill, Cat Co beach no. 1,2, 3 and Lan Ha Bay. In addition, the delegation also surveyed some areas gathering a lot of waste in the estuary of Cam river and Bach Dang river and the waste treatment plant in Trang Cat solid waste treatment area.

In the framework of the working trip in Hai Phong, the delegation had a meeting with Hai Phong Department of Foreign Affairs regarding the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Hai Phong and Kagawa as well as the bilateral cooperation plans in the coming time in the field of education and training. Over the past time, the two localities have always maintained close cooperation in the fields of environment through the initial construction of marine waste reduction project; education and training through cooperation activities between Hai Phong Medical College and Kagawa Association of Vocational Schools. On the basis of existing cooperation and actual situation, in the coming time, the two sides will study and consider signing a memorandum of understanding as well as expanding cooperation in exchanging schools, students and focal point staffs, etc…
