Delegation of Malaysian Embassy visited and worked in Hai Phong

On May 15th 2023, H.E. Mr. Dato’ Tan Yang Thai, Ambassador of Malaysia to Viet Nam, had a working visit to Hai Phong City. Chairman of Hai Phong People’s Committee chaired the meeting with the delegation. Attending the meeting were leaders of Departments of Foreign Affairs, Planning and Investment, Trade and Industry, Culture and Sports, and Office of the City People’s Committee.

Chairing the meeting, the Chairman of Hai Phong City People’s Committee informed the Ambassador of the areas that the city is interested in promoting and calling for foreign direct investments from large groups, that are tourism, education and training, industry and logistics. Regarding tourism, Hai Phong City has called investments in Do Son and Cat Ba tourism areas; in terms of education and training, the city wishes to foster effective cooperation between schools in the city and big partners of Malaysia in the economic field, including the marine economy. Connected and modern transport infrastructure has positively contributed to the city’s economic development; annual economic growth rate of the city is about 12% - 13%.

Impressed by the openness and strong development of the city’s economic efficiency,  friendliness of the local people, Ambassador Dato’ Tan Yang Thai agreed with the suggestions of the Chairman of Hai Phong City People’s Committee on the fields of cooperation that the both sides have potential to explore and cooperate in the future. Ambassador shared that Hai Phong Port City has similarities with Klang Port City of Malaysia which is a 02-hour drive from the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. Klang City is a major port city that plays an important role in Malaysia’s GDP growth. Ambassador also mentioned that Hai Phong was his third destination since he took office in Viet Nam in 2023. This shows the interests of Malaysia in researching, seeking, and developing potentials and opportunities for cooperation between Malaysia and Viet Nam in general, between Malaysian partners and Hai Phong City in particular.

After the meeting with leaders of Hai Phong City, the delegation of Malaysian Embassy in Viet Nam worked with leaders of Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company and visited Tan Vu Port.

At the meeting with the delegation, leaders of Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company shared information about the development of Hai Phong Port, with the expansion from Cam River Port to Chua Ve Port, Dinh Vu Port, and recently Lach Huyen Port. Regarding Dinh Vu Port, since its inauguration and put into operation in 2013, the Tan Vu Port has achieved an annual growth rate of more than 15%, even during Covid-19 pandemic.

Based on business growth rate and operational efficiency of berths No. 1 and No. 2; berth No. 3 and No. 4 of Lach Huyen port are under construction with a completed volume of 35% and expected to be completed and to be put into operation by the end of 2024, early 2025. Impressed by the development of Hai Phong Port, the delegation visited and observed the development of Tan Vu Port infrastructure./.
