The Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm Memorial Site: A Cultural and Historical Landmark in Vĩnh Bảo

Nestled in the fertile plains of Vĩnh Bảo District, Hải Phòng City, the Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm Memorial Site is not only a repository of invaluable historical heritage but also a vibrant cultural space imbued with the spirit of learning and the profound life philosophy of one of Vietnam’s most brilliant scholars.

A Sacred Land – Birthplace of a Great Scholar

Located in Trung Am Hamlet, Lý Học Commune, this is where Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm—revered as Trạng Trình, the “sage of wisdom” of the 16th century—was born, lived, and left an indelible mark. Covering nearly 92,000 square meters, the memorial faces east—symbolizing enlightenment and knowledge. In front lies a serene lake, to the north is the Tuyết Giang River, the east opens to the vast sea, the west is lined with green fields of rice and tobacco, and the south borders peaceful village homes. This harmonious landscape exemplifies the Vietnamese belief in "sacred land producing extraordinary people."

A Rich Architectural Ensemble Steeped in History

The Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm Memorial is a large, diverse architectural complex, including the Main Temple, temples honoring his parents, Bạch Vân Hermitage, Trung Tân Pavilion, Kình Thiên Pen Tower, the square, statue monument, and more.

Through the ancient three-entrance gate with the Chinese characters "Trung Am Tự" (Temple of Trung Am), visitors are greeted by the main temple dedicated to Trạng Trình. Built in 1585 on the foundation of his former residence, the temple spans over four hectares. At its center stands a wooden statue of Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm seated on a throne, wearing a royal dragon robe and a scholar’s hat, holding a book in one hand—a representation of his identity as both Confucian scholar and philosopher.

In front of the temple lies Thái Nhâm Lake, reflecting the temple's heritage in its still waters. A stone bridge leads to an ancient stele erected in 1736 (under the Lê Dynasty), which documents the names of those who contributed to the temple’s construction.

The temple also houses numerous valuable artifacts dating from the 17th to early 20th centuries: royal tablets, altars, ceremonial objects, and a yellow-brown glazed incense burner. Especially notable is a blue stone tablet inscribed with the words “Trường Xuân Kiều” ("Trường Xuân Bridge"), said to be penned by Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm himself, encouraging local people to build the bridge—an enduring symbol of his deep concern for the common people.

Not far from the main temple is Song Mai Pagoda, where Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm often came to worship. He once famously said to Lord Trịnh: “Keep the pagoda, worship Buddha, and you’ll get the offerings”—a statement rich in political metaphor. Adjacent to the pagoda is the Ancestral House, which honors his wife, Lady Minh Nguyệt, who played a vital role in building the pagoda and educating future generations.

Bạch Vân Hermitage – The Sanctuary of Thought and Creation

A highlight of the complex is Bạch Vân Hermitage, reconstructed in the style of a traditional three-room thatched cottage. After resigning from public office, Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm returned here to teach, compose poetry, and write. From this humble retreat, he composed thousands of Nôm poems and literary works such as Bạch Vân Am Thi Tập, Trình Quốc Công Sấm Ký, and Bạch Vân Quốc Ngữ Thi Tập.

These writings convey profound philosophical insights—emphasizing harmony with nature, service to the people, and detachment from worldly ambition—and have guided countless generations. The hermitage also served as a meeting place where Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm received envoys from the Mạc, Trịnh, and Nguyễn dynasties seeking his counsel on national affairs.

His lifestyle—"retired but not reclusive, outside the court yet close to the people"—epitomizes the Vietnamese ideal of a true intellectual: wise, moral, and engaged in society even while apart from power.

The Monument and Relief Wall – A Lasting Tribute

At the heart of the memorial is a 5.7-meter-tall, 8.5-ton stone statue of Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm, depicted seated in a contemplative pose with book and pen in hand, gazing serenely toward the crescent-shaped lake. Behind him rises an artificial mountain, symbolizing the mighty "Thunder Mountain" as a metaphor for his unshakable wisdom.

Flanking the statue are two large bas-reliefs, each over 20 meters long and 5 meters high, vividly portraying the scholar’s life—from childhood to his rise as a national sage. These intricately carved murals not only captivate visitors with their artistic detail but also offer a moving historical narrative, making the site popular for photography and educational visits.

The Kình Thiên Pen Tower and Heritage Museum – Living Legacies

Also within the site is the Kình Thiên Pen Tower, believed to have been erected by Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm’s disciples as a tribute to his genius. The tower represents a pen standing upright against the sky—a bold symbol of “intellect as the nation’s pillar”.

Nearby is the Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm Heritage Museum, which houses hundreds of valuable documents and artifacts: his handwritten notes, ancient printed texts, prophetic verses, and more. This space allows visitors to travel back in time, witnessing the breadth and depth of a mind that truly “understood destiny and knew the times.”

Spiritual Heritage and National Significance

More than just a historical site, the memorial also embodies intangible cultural values, deeply rooted in the spiritual life and collective memory of the Vietnamese people. Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm symbolizes the ideal that “virtuous talent is the essence of the nation,” blending Confucian scholarship, Buddhist compassion, and Daoist harmony.

In recognition of its unique significance, in 2015, the Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm Memorial Site was designated a Special National Relic by the Prime Minister of Vietnam—a prestigious acknowledgment of its lasting historical and cultural value.

Bridging the Past and Present

Through the ups and downs of history, the memorial has undergone many restorations to preserve its original essence while welcoming modern visitors. For those who have read his famous prophecy, “A strip of land along Hoành Sơn shall be a place of refuge for eternity,” or studied his wise teachings, setting foot here is a deeply emotional experience—a reconnection with the roots of Vietnamese intellectual and moral tradition.

The Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm Memorial Site is not only a destination of historical significance, but also a place of cultural reflection and patriotic pride. If you ever visit Vĩnh Bảo District in Hải Phòng, don’t miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in this tranquil setting—where a great thinker once lived, taught, and penned prophetic verses that continue to inspire generations.
