On November 22, 2024, Hai Phong's Department of Industry and Trade, in collaboration with the Union of Scientific and Technical Associations, organized a scientific seminar titled "Reviving and Developing Hai Phong's Shipbuilding Industry: Current Status, Opportunities, Challenges, and Solutions." The event gathered nearly 180 participants, including representatives from central and local government agencies, businesses, and academic institutions, as well as five shipbuilding companies from South Korea.
Hai Phong has long been a key hub for Vietnam's shipbuilding industry, with a rich tradition and a skilled workforce. However, in recent decades, the industry has faced significant challenges, including fierce international competition and technological demands, which have stalled growth. Despite these struggles, the sector has seen a resurgence, and there is now an urgent need to evaluate its current state and explore solutions for future development.
The seminar aimed to raise awareness of the shipbuilding industry's crucial role in Vietnam's industrialization and modernization. It also focused on assessing the current situation, identifying opportunities, and proposing solutions to revive and advance the industry in Hai Phong.
Key discussions centered on Hai Phong's strengths, such as its strategic location, modern port infrastructure, and highly skilled workforce. However, participants acknowledged the growing challenges posed by global competition and the need for technological innovation to meet international standards.
To address these issues, the seminar highlighted several practical solutions, including investing in research and development (R&D), fostering international collaboration, and implementing supportive policies at the local government level.
The Vice Chairman of Hai Phong People's Committee, Mr.Lê Anh Quân emphasized the city's strategic position as a key maritime hub in northern Vietnam and the importance of the shipbuilding sector in Hai Phong's economic development. He acknowledged the industry's current challenges but reaffirmed the city's commitment to supporting businesses and creating favorable conditions for sustainable growth.
Overall, the seminar underscored the need for continuous transformation in Hai Phong's shipbuilding industry, with innovation, collaboration, and government support playing crucial roles in ensuring its long-term success in the global market.
