Opening of the first ASEAN Graphic Painting Exhibition 2024 held in Hai Phong

On the afternoon of December 6, at Hai Phong Museum, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinated with the People's Committee of Hai Phong City to organize the Opening and Award Ceremony of the 2024 ASEAN Graphic Painting Competition and Exhibition.

Attending the program were Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong; Vice Chairman of Hai Phong City People's Committee Le Khac Nam; representatives of embassies of several ASEAN countries; and representatives of leaders of units under the Central Ministries, departments and branches; relevant agencies and units inside and outside the city.

The ASEAN Graphic Painting Competition and Exhibition is a cultural and artistic activity organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism every four years in Vietnam (from 2016 to present), aiming to introduce works by painters and sculptors from ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. 

The works are about life, people, natural landscapes, countries, praising peace, solidarity, cooperation, friendship and contemporary issues of shared concern among ASEAN countries. This is an opportunity for Vietnamese artists and artists from ASEAN countries to exchange and introduce new achievements in graphic art creation in the region; introduce the culture, country and people of each country in the ASEAN community.

The exhibition takes place from December 6 to 20, 2024, displaying 151 works by 131 authors from 10 ASEAN countries. The works selected at the exhibition are diversed in form, content, and expression techniques. With the methods of printmaking: relief printing, sunken printing, flat printing, see-through printing, monoprinting, digital printing, photosensitive printing combined with different techniques and expression materials, the artists have brought newness and excitement to each work, stimulating the vision and emotions of viewers with subtle expressions due to the effectiveness of graphic art. 

Based on the evaluation results from the International Arts Council established by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Organizing Committee awarded 16 prizes, including: 01 First Prize, 03 Second Prizes, 05 Third Prizes, 07 Encouragement Prizes. This is a huge encouragement and motivation for graphic artists of ASEAN countries to have more motivation to continue to create more high-quality works in the future.

Speaking at the event, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Le Khac Nam introduced to domestic and international friends about Hai Phong city, which is always considered a major cultural and artistic center of Vietnam, has many famous names with worthy positions in the Vietnamese literary world such as: The Lu, Tran Tieu, Nguyen Hong, Nguyen Dinh Thi, Van Cao, Do Nhuan, Le Dai Thanh, Mai Trung Thu, Tran Van Can, Hoang Quy..., and genres such as: literature, music, fine arts, photography, theater, cinema and in recent decades, artists: Tho Van, Nguyen Ha, Manh Cuong, also many painters and sculptors of Hai Phong have been honored to receive noble awards in national and international competitions and festivals.

 

The Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee said that in recent years, the fine arts activities of Hai Phong city have always developed vigorously, creating the unique style and quality of the painters of the port city; affirming the position and prestige in the Vietnamese fine arts; gradually integrating with the world fine arts; attracting painters from provinces and cities in the country and internationally to Hai Phong, creating opportunities for exchange and cooperation in painting of different cultures; affirming the position of Hai Phong city as a place of cultural exchange, development and integration.

Hai Phong City is honored to be chosen by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as the host of the ASEAN Graphic Arts Competition and Exhibition 2024; this demonstrates the trust of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, of artists and sculptors nationwide and internationally in Hai Phong; at the same time, it also demonstrates the policy of encouraging the development of literary and artistic activities of the city according to the viewpoint that "culture must be placed on par with economics, politics and society" and the spirit of Resolution No. 32 of the Politburo on continuing to build and develop literature and art in the new situation; Resolutions of the Hai Phong City Party Committee on developing Hai Phong culture in the period of industrialization and modernization.

The Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee believes that the artworks with various content, diverse in form, technique and method of expression; with the enthusiasm, talent and responsibility of the artists, each work participating in the Competition and Exhibition will be a meaningful message about life, orienting and enhancing the aesthetic taste of the people, accompanying the construction and development of contemporary Vietnamese Fine Arts.
