Hai Phong seaports are focusing on accelerating the construction of green ports to meet the criteria for receiving large ships, in line with the general development trend of world seaports.
As the main gateway to the sea in the North, Hai Phong seaport currently has a direct shipping route to European countries, the United States, Northeast Asia, etc. These markets are gradually requiring shipping lines and ports to stop by to pick up goods that meet green port criteria. Therefore, Hai Phong seaports are taking advantage of the time to accelerate the construction of green ports to meet the criteria for receiving large ships in the future, in line with the general development trend of world seaports.
Recently, container terminals No. 3 and 4 at Lach Huyen port area were inaugurated, marking an important step forward in the development of modern, green and smart seaport infrastructure, contributing to improving transport capacity and promoting regional and national economic development.
The project has a total length of two berths of 750m, depth of -16m, capable of receiving 165,000 DWT mother ships (14,000 TEUs) and 200,000 DWT offloaded ships, along with a 250m barge berth to receive 3,000 DWT ships (160 TEUs) and an advanced loading and unloading equipment system.
Mr. Pham Hong Minh - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company said that berths No. 3 and No. 4 are invested and operated according to the green port - smart port model, applying modern technology, automation, ensuring environmental standards, saving energy, sustainable development in line with the sustainable development trend of the world maritime industry. This model not only improves loading and unloading efficiency, reduces the time ships are at berth but also contributes to building a circular economy, reducing carbon emissions, in line with the sustainable development strategy of Vietnam and the world.
In 2024, the total volume of goods passed through will reach about 106.5 million tons, of which container output will be about 7.4 million TEUs.
When operating at full capacity, these two new ports will contribute to increasing the total handling capacity of Hai Phong port by 1.35 ÷ 1.5 million TEU/year, meeting the increasing demand for import and export goods through the region, while strongly promoting logistics services, reducing transportation costs, and enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods.
Mr. Le Anh Quan - Permanent Vice Chairman of Hai Phong City People's Committee said: "The inauguration of International Container Terminals No. 3 and No. 4 in Lach Huyen not only enhances the operational capacity of Hai Phong Port and Vietnam National Shipping Lines but also contributes significantly to the socio-economic development of the city and the Northern region. This is a strategic step, creating momentum for Hai Phong to develop into a modern, green - clean - smart logistics center, in line with the trend of integration and sustainable development".
Previously, in April 2025, Hai Phong City officially put Hateco Hai Phong International Container Port (HHIT) into operation, marking an important milestone in the development of Vietnam's marine economy. At Hateco Port, technical infrastructure and data infrastructure operate in parallel to ensure comprehensive real-time control, helping to control all activities quickly, accurately and transparently. The port's OC Operations Center monitors and handles all situations in real time. All operations are managed by synchronous TOS software, directly connected to the CCTV camera system, QR control, integrated with the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) automatic identification system and smart security warnings, ensuring that all operations are monitored and optimized.
Hateco Hai Phong International Container Port is also the first unit in Vietnam to deploy the TAS (Truck Appointment System) application, a container truck appointment booking platform, helping drivers proactively schedule their port entry and exit times, saving time and improving operating experience.
Steadily reaching out to the ocean
In fact, Hai Phong, a traditional seaport mainly serving domestic transport, with rudimentary loading and unloading technology and limited infrastructure, has not yet met international standards. Today, the port system has developed strongly with over 50 modern ports, meeting the needs of domestic and international maritime transport, improving the ability to receive large tonnage ships and increasing connections with the global market.
This transformation helps Hai Phong maintain its position as the most important seaport center in Northern Vietnam. In recent years, the Hai Phong seaport system has applied modern technology to port operations, automating many stages in the cargo loading and unloading process, improving operational efficiency. Expanding the service network, connecting with major shipping lines in the world, attracting international shipping routes, increasing the capacity of cargo transit. Hai Phong has become an important link in the global supply chain, an attractive destination for investors and logistics enterprises at home and abroad.
According to the plan by 2030, Lach Huyen port area will develop from 13 - 16 ports with 14 - 18 wharves.
The scale and stature of the Hai Phong seaport system is clearly demonstrated through its output in 2024. Of which, the total volume of goods throughput will reach about 106.5 million tons, of which container throughput will be about 7.4 million TEUs. These are extremely important contributions to the total output of the Vietnamese seaport system. With this result, Hai Phong maintains its role as the largest seaport center in the Northern region and is one of the two container port clusters with the largest throughput in the country.
According to the plan until 2030, Lach Huyen port area will develop from 13 - 16 ports with 14 - 18 wharves, meeting the cargo throughput from 61.4 million tons to 90 million tons and serving from 10,500 - 11,000 passengers per year. Currently, Hai Phong City always creates favorable conditions for investors to continue to build and operate the remaining ports in Lach Huyen and Nam Do Son.
Mr. Le Anh Quan affirmed: “Hai Phong is committed to always accompanying and creating all conditions for investors to build, operate and exploit the remaining ports of Lach Huyen port and Nam Do Son port as well as invest in high-tech industrial parks, modern seaport services and logistics according to the green growth model, circular economy, and sustainable development”.
Mr. Bruno Jaspaert - General Director of DEEP C Industrial Park Complex shared that Hai Phong is not only attractive because of its geographical location, but also because of the policies and determination of the city's leaders, gradually turning Hai Phong into a world-class port city.
