Hai Phong is gradually realizing its goal of becoming an industrial and high-tech center of the country and the region by 2030.

Hai Phong aims to become an industrial and high-tech center of the country and the region by 2030.

"Incubators" are important for development

In the 90s of the last century, like the whole country, Hai Phong City faced many difficulties and challenges in the development process. In that context, finding a new direction for development was an urgent requirement. Hai Phong pioneered in planning and establishing Industrial Parks (IPs) and Economic Zones (EZs).

In 2008, Hai Phong was allowed by the Government to establish Dinh Vu - Cat Hai Economic Zone. This was a major breakthrough, an important boost to establish industrial zones and realize socio-economic development goals. This is also the most important factor for Hai Phong to attract investment, both in attracting FDI and DDI capital, always in the top of the country.

Over the past three decades, industrial parks and economic zones have not only been the backbone of the city's economy but also an important "incubator" for the development of high-tech industries, becoming an attractive destination for global investors.

Currently, with 2 strategic economic zones, Dinh Vu - Cat Hai, operating effectively and the Southern coastal economic zone in the formation stage, along with a network of 18 existing industrial parks, Hai Phong has successfully created a diverse, dynamic and attractive industrial ecosystem.

Mr. Le Trung Kien - Head of Hai Phong Economic Zone Management Board said: “The formation and growth of this ecosystem has a strong imprint of professional and reputable industrial park infrastructure investors such as DEEP C, Trang Due Industrial Park, VSIP Hai Phong, Nam Dinh Vu... These units not only play a key role in attracting huge investment capital flows, both domestic and foreign, but also pioneer in bringing international standards in technical infrastructure, social infrastructure, business support services and applying modern and sustainable management processes. This methodical investment has created a solid foundation, attracting a series of large-scale production projects in many key fields such as high-tech electronics, equipment manufacturing, precision mechanics, logistics and supporting industries”.

According to Mr. Kien, the special highlight that creates outstanding competitive strength for Hai Phong's industrial ecosystem is the organic and close connection between Dinh Vu - Cat Hai Economic Zone with industrial parks and the Lach Huyen deep-water seaport system. This international gateway port, with berths 1 and 2 having been put into stable operation, demonstrating outstanding efficiency, along with berths 3, 4, 5, 6 starting to operate and the next berths in the investment roadmap, has become the most important logistics link in the North. This seamless connection helps optimize the supply chain, minimize transportation costs, shorten the time of goods delivery, creating an undeniable competitive advantage for businesses operating here.

Mr. Ko Tae Yeon - Chairman of the Korean Business Association in Vietnam commented that, in general, Hai Phong's FDI attraction orientation is very good. However, in the coming time, Hai Phong City still needs to be more selective, especially focusing on high-tech enterprises, because this will be the future development of Hai Phong.

Step by step to assert position

Hai Phong City aims to become an industrial and high-tech center of the country and the region by 2030. Hai Phong is currently gradually realizing this aspiration for breakthrough and sustainable development by proactively improving the quality of economic development, transforming from a traditional industrial model to a model based on modern technology, innovation and greening.

In particular, in its development strategy, Hai Phong is determined not to trade the environment for mere economic growth. Hai Phong aims to develop its economy in tandem with environmental protection, ensuring harmony between economic and social interests, for the sustainable development of the city. The locality has also clearly identified high-tech sectors that need to be prioritized for development, including: electronics, medical equipment manufacturing, biotechnology, automation, robotics, AI, renewable energy, etc.

Integrating smart technology elements, automation applications and advanced production management helps businesses optimize production processes and increase productivity.

“Thanks to the "Economic Zone - Industrial Park - Seaport" chain, Hai Phong has been affirming its position as a leading industrial and seaport service center in the region, an attractive destination for global investors looking for opportunities in Vietnam and Southeast Asia,” said Mr. Le Trung Kien.

Mr. Le Anh Quan - Permanent Vice Chairman of Hai Phong City People's Committee said that in order to continue to maintain its position and make an important mark in the journey to realize the nation's aspirations, Hai Phong will firmly orientate to create a favorable investment and business environment for domestic and foreign investors. The city will focus on developing areas with strengths such as trade, seaports and logistics, marine tourism, promoting startups and innovation as the main driving force for the development of green economy, circular economy and environmentally friendly industry.
