Stepping into 2025, Hai Phong Port’s ambition to become Vietnam’s largest transshipment port, with regional and global reach, is becoming increasingly clear and attainable.

Amid the bustling year-end atmosphere, Mr. Bui Nguyen Khoi, Director of Hai Phong Maritime Administration, excitedly reported that in 2024, for the first time, Hai Phong Port reached a cargo throughput of over 100 million tons (106 million tons), marking a more than 10% increase compared to 2023. Hai Phong’s shipping lane became the busiest in the country, with over 17,000 ship arrivals and departures. This result is even more significant given the difficulties in maritime operations due to tensions in the Red Sea, port congestion in Singapore, and the impact of Typhoon No. 3. Despite this, port operators in Hai Phong maximized opportunities, leveraged internal strength, and all achieved double-digit growth. These impressive outcomes set the foundation for Hai Phong Maritime Administration to set an ambitious target for 2025—over 115 million tons of cargo.
2024 also marked the first year that Hai Phong Port JSC achieved a business profit target of VND 1,000 billion (compared to VND 898.1 billion in 2023) and cargo throughput of over 39 million tons. Most subsidiaries recorded significant growth. For instance, Hoang Dieu Port Co., Ltd., despite gradually handing over land and relocating for the Nguyen Trai Bridge and surrounding urban development project, completed its business plan by mid-August 2024. Tan Vu Port Branch reached 1 million TEUs for the fourth consecutive year and maintained its No. 1 position in automobile imports/exports in Hai Phong. The port also won the "Best Performance Award 2024" for its RORO vessel service, awarded by shipping line "K" Line.
2024 was also a vibrant and efficient year for the Hai Phong International Gateway Port in Lach Huyen, where berths 3, 4, 5, and 6 were rapidly constructed, equipped, and prepared for operation in Q1 2025.
In the same year, Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Terminal (TCHICT) recorded a record throughput of 1.5 million TEUs (far exceeding the designed capacity of 1.1 million TEUs) and was recognized as a "green port." TCHICT is now fully capable of receiving the world’s largest container ships.
To prepare for the operation of berths 3 and 4 at Hai Phong International Gateway Port (Lach Huyen) in early 2025, Mr. Pham Hong Minh, Chairman of the Board of Hai Phong Port JSC, shared that from mid-November 2024, the company coordinated with Japanese equipment suppliers to transport, install, and calibrate 6 STS container cranes and 24 RTG cranes at berths 3 and 4. These are state-of-the-art, energy-efficient, 100% electric-powered cranes that support environmental protection and green port development. Hai Phong Port also signed a cooperation agreement with Tan Cang Northern Maritime JSC to operate Azimuth tugboats in Lach Huyen, preparing to welcome large ships. Additionally, a training course on CATOS and EPORT software operations was organized in cooperation with the TSB Korea Consortium to ensure smooth operations at berths 3 and 4, with the goal of achieving 1.1 million TEUs/year, scalable to 2 million TEUs/year.
Meanwhile, Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal Co., Ltd. is racing against time to bring berths 5 and 6 at Lach Huyen into operation by Q1 2025. According to General Director Nguyen Van Tien, Hateco has successfully installed 5 STS cranes and 14 RTG cranes—the most modern and largest currently available. Notably, Hateco’s STS cranes can handle up to 24 container rows, equivalent to the world’s largest container ships. This represents a new milestone in upgrading specialized equipment as part of the port’s development strategy to enhance cargo handling capacity and logistics efficiency, responding to the rapidly growing transshipment demand at Hai Phong Port.
With the policy of “reaching out to the open sea,” Hai Phong Port continues to expand. Berths 7 and 8 are undergoing preparatory procedures for groundbreaking. Berths 9, 10, 11, and 12 at Lach Huyen have submitted investment proposal dossiers to the Ministry of Planning and Investment. According to Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Duy Lam, the Ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Hai Phong People’s Committee to prepare and finalize documents for the Prime Minister to approve investment policies for two starter berths in the South Do Son Port Area by 2026, aiming to complete and put them into operation before 2030. Once operational, this seaport project will significantly contribute to the city’s socio-economic development. In the near future, Hai Phong will have two international transshipment ports: Lach Huyen and South Do Son.
