Within the framework of cooperation between Kitakyushu City (Japan) and Hai Phong City, from May 27 to 30, 2025, a working delegation from Kitakyushu conducted a field survey in Vinh Bao District to implement the Rural Waste Management Project.
On May 27, 2025, the Kitakyushu delegation met with leaders of the Vinh Bao District People's Committee and representatives of relevant local agencies. The meeting focused on assessing the current state of rural waste management in the district based on field survey results from October 2024, as well as discussing plans to pilot activities in three communes/towns: Vinh Bao, Tan Lien, and Tan Hung.
The delegation also organized meetings and discussions with local authorities, the Women's Union, mass organizations, and residents in the three communes/towns. During these sessions, the Kitakyushu team shared findings on waste management challenges in Vinh Bao. Currently, the district primarily relies on landfilling, facing limitations such as landfill overload and a lack of long-term sustainable solutions.
The delegation introduced Japan’s waste management experience, particularly the 3R (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) circular resource model and detailed waste sorting into 27 categories—practiced in Osaki and Kamikatsu towns—which reduced landfilled waste by 87% over nearly a decade. They encouraged residents and authorities to adopt measures such as:
- Composting organic waste
- Reusing materials
- Collecting recyclables
- Preventing littering
- Maintaining environmental hygiene
In addition to meetings, the delegation conducted field visits to households to observe waste sorting and disposal practices, while distributing and collecting surveys to gather community feedback for tailored solutions.
This working trip reflects the joint efforts of Kitakyushu and Hai Phong in developing an effective, eco-friendly rural waste management model to improve residents' quality of life. The Kitakyushu delegation highly appreciated the proactive cooperation of Vinh Bao’s authorities and people, reaffirming their commitment to supporting the district in implementing sustainable waste management solutions in the coming time.
