In the morning of June 23, 2022, Australian Embassy’s delegation led by Mr. David Gollieb, Economic Counselor, visited Hai Phong City and had a meeting with the City People’s Committee. Hosted the meeting Mr. Nguyen Van Tho, Vice Chairman of the City People’s Committee, with participation of leaders of relevant departments.

At the meeting, the Economic Counselor expressed the purpose of the delegation’s visit to Hai Phong City is to introduce Corio Generation, a branch of Macquarie Group, which has been showing their much interest in the offshore wind market in Vietnam in general and in Hai Phong City in particular. On behalf of Hai Phong City People’s Committee, the Vice Chairman expressed the city’s warm greetings and welcomed the delegates. The Vice Chairman got a brief introduction about the city’s recent economic and social achievements, ambitious targets to become a modern, smart, green and sustainable city as well as to become an international city in Asia and internationally as identified in the Resolution no. 45 of the Politburo. Among those targets is priority and direction regarding renewable energy sources, particularly ones generated from offshore wind and on-roof solar, in order to serve economic growth and guarantee safety of the national grid system. The Vice Chairman also noted some figures in regards to economic performance and the pandemic COVID-19 prevention and control persistence of the city during the year of 2021 and the early 6 months of 2022. Indeed, thanks to the support of the Central Government, the city’s authority and people, the city has gained impressive results in terms of economy, trade, investment; the city has ranked in the second highest regarding CPI (Competitive Provinces Index) while GRDP of the City has been always in two digits. In that context, the city has shown its need for strong and sustainable energy sources, which are generated from renewable energy such as wind or solar energy. In terms of offshore wind energy, the city has been in the interest of many reputable and well-known groups domestically and externally. During recent years, the city has received proposal projects from those groups seeking permission to do surveys on potential offshore wind in the Gulf under administrative management of the city. It is also said that such areas as Bach Long Vy Island or Bang La coastal area have been recommended for potential offshore wind capacity. With a coastal length of more than 120 km, Hai Phong has been definitely carrying out potential volumes of offshore wind energy.

Being impressed about the city’s recent achievements, the Counselor of Economy showed his belief that the city would achieve further and expected stronger cooperation from both sides in terms of offshore wind energy. The Counselor introduced the Corio Generation, which is a branch of the Macquarie Group, with their reputation and practical experiences in offshore wind generation and delivery globally. For instance, the company has successfully managed its business in European countries (the UK, German, France) and Asian market (Japan, Korea, Taiwan-China), and has been now moving to Vietnam as it considered the country as a potential abundant market of offshore wind energy. The Counselor expected the city would pay more attention to the company’s interest and its project proposal on offshore wind energy./.
