Accelerating the Construction of Two Initial Berths at Nam Do Son Port

As part of his working program in Hai Phong City, on the afternoon of February 26, Mr. Tran Hong Minh, Member of the Party Central Committee and Minister of Transport, visited and inspected the deployment and operation of port berths at the Hai Phong International Gateway Port in Lach Huyen and the planned Nam Do Son Port. Accompanying him was Mr. Nguyen Xuan Sang, Deputy Minister of Transport.

On the city’s side, Mr. Nguyen Van Tung, Chairman of Hai Phong People’s Committee, received and worked with the delegation, along with representatives from relevant departments, agencies, and localities.

The Minister and the working group surveyed investment and operational activities of the berths at Lach Huyen and the site proposed for the Nam Do Son Port. During the inspection, Minister Tran Hong Minh highly praised the efforts of the investors at the Lach Huyen terminal area for their dedication in building and operating the port facilities, which significantly elevate Hai Phong’s—and Vietnam’s—position on the global maritime map. Notably, berths No. 1 and 2 surpassed their designed capacity of 1.1 million TEUs, achieving 1.6 million TEUs in 2024. Tan Cang Corporation is currently expediting preparations to begin construction of berths No. 7 and 8, with groundbreaking expected in Q1 2026 and operation targeted for 2027.

At the proposed Nam Do Son Port location, Minister Tran Hong Minh expressed strong support for Hai Phong City's proposals to accelerate the implementation of two initial berths. He also emphasized the importance of coordinating with other central ministries and agencies to promptly resolve obstacles related to the coastal road investment project—particularly the segment through Hai Phong City and the 9 km portion in Thai Binh Province—in order to bring the route into operation as soon as possible.

Currently, Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company is expediting the construction and equipment installation to soon put berths No. 3 and 4 in the Lach Huyen area into commercial operation. Meanwhile, berths No. 5 and 6, operated by Hateco Hai Phong International Container Co., Ltd., have already begun commercial operations, with the first vessel received on February 6. Within the first 20 days of operation, the port handled over 25,000 TEUs.

To improve operational efficiency and productivity, Hateco Hai Phong International Container Co., Ltd. has requested that the Ministry of Transport and the Hai Phong People’s Committee approve the official inauguration of berths No. 5 and 6. The company also requested the prompt investment in a turning basin in front of these berths and the upgrading of Hai Phong's maritime channel to a two-way route.
