In the long history and cultural tradition of Vietnam, “Trạng nguyên” (First-Ranked Doctoral Laureates) are not only symbols of scholarly excellence and intellectual brilliance but also individuals who made significant contributions to the nation's governance and defense. Among them, “Trạng nguyên” Trần Tất Văn stands out as a unique figure, known not only for his high academic achievement but also for his loyalty, talent, and virtuous character. Today, the Temple of “Trạng nguyên,” Trần Tất Văn, located in Nguyệt Áng Hamlet, Thái Sơn Commune, An Lão District, Hải Phòng City, is a nationally recognized historical site commemorating this exceptional son of the homeland.

Biography of “Trạng nguyên” Trần Tất Văn

Trần Tất Văn was born into a Confucian family in Nguyệt Áng Village, Đại Hoàng Subdistrict, Kinh Môn Prefecture, Hải Dương Province (present-day Thái Sơn Commune, An Lão District, Hải Phòng City). From an early age, he was known for his intelligence, love of learning, and determination.

In the Year of Dog (1526), under the reign of King Lê Cung Hoàng, Trần Tất Văn passed the “Đình” examination and earned the prestigious title of “Trạng nguyên”. He became the 20th and final “Trạng nguyê”n of the Later Lê dynasty before power transitioned to the Mạc dynasty. After passing the imperial exams, he was appointed to a fourth-rank mandarin position and held key posts in the royal court.

When Mạc Đăng Dung established the Mạc dynasty, Trần Tất Văn was still highly respected and appointed to oversee five military command offices and key administrative institutions. He played an important role in stabilizing the new regime. Under Mạc Đăng Doanh, the son of Mạc Đăng Dung, he continued to serve and was promoted to the position of Minister (Thượng thư) and conferred the noble title of Hàn Xuyên Bá, responsible for drafting royal correspondence and diplomatic documents between the Mạc dynasty and the Ming court of China.

The Temple of Trạng nguyên Trần Tất Văn – A Cultural Landmark in An Lão

After Trần Tất Văn’s passing, the people of Nguyệt Áng village built a temple in his honor, located on a "dragon’s eye" mound, flanked by two smaller mounds shaped like a writing brush and inkstone – traditional symbols of scholarship. This unique topography reflects both spiritual and symbolic reverence for academic achievement.

The temple complex consists of several architectural elements: the ceremonial gate (nghi môn), front hall (tiền tế), main ceremonial hall (bái đường), and inner sanctuary (hậu cung). Constructed in traditional Vietnamese style, the temple is spacious and dignified, preserving the historical and spiritual essence of the region. Inside the temple stands a statue of Trần Tất Văn, along with decorative plaques and couplets extolling his virtues and service to the nation.

Nguyệt Áng Communal House – A Companion Heritage Site

Within the same cultural complex is the Nguyệt Áng Communal House, also known as Đình Bảng, located in Hamlet 2 of Thái Sơn Commune. The communal house honors the village tutelary god, Lê Hữu Uy, posthumously known as Linh Hoàng, a native of Nguyệt Áng. According to local legend, Lê Hữu Uy was a talented military and literary figure who fought under the Trần dynasty and twice led victorious campaigns against the Champa invaders. In gratitude, the villagers built a shrine and communal house in his memory. The structure features elegant architecture from the Nguyễn dynasty era and reflects the community’s deep respect for their ancestral heroes.
